NEW ZEALAND INFORMATION

New Zealand is a very easy, relaxed place to travel and one of the safest places in the world.

When it comes to the sheer concentration of breathtaking scenery, cultural attractions, wildlife, mountains, white clean beaches, sunny skies and wide open spaces like hardly anywhere else, there is simply no other place on earth like New Zealand.

New Zealand stretches 1600km from north to south. The North Island (115,000 sq km) and the South Island (151,000 sq km) are the two major landmasses. Stewart Island, with an area of 1700 sq km lies directly south of the South Island and is a great place to discover the real Kiwi.  New Zealand's land area is greater that that of the Uk (244,800 sq km) but smaller than that of Japan (377,800 sq km).

The number of permanent inhabitants of New Zealand is roughly 4 Million with 1.5 Million already living in Auckland – the largest City of New Zealand. Not to mix up with the Capital of New Zealand being Wellington.

Roughly 75% of the population of New Zealand is living in the 5 major Cities so you can imagine that the rest of New Zealand is not very highly populated, making New Zealand perfect for outdoor and camping experiences.

New Zealand is extremely well set up for camping with heaps of public toilets and camping facilities, as the New Zealanders are a Camper nation themselves.

IMMIGRATION

New Zealand has strict immigration rules and laws to protect its agricultural industries. If you bring in items such as food and plant, make sure you declare them as none or incorrect declaration may result in an instant fee of NZ$ 200.--. Items that need to be declared in New Zealand include:

* food and the products and ingredients used for preparing food
* plants and parts of plants (alive or dead)
* animals (alive or dead) or products from animals
* equipment used with animals
* camping gear, golf clubs, hiking boots, shoes, equestrian equipment and used bicycles
* biological specimens

For exact details visit the New Zealand Official Immigration Web site
www.immigration.govt.nz

For all those who want to make New Zealand their permanent home we might have a couple of insider tips for you as we had to work through the process ourselves. And it is always better to get information from somebody who has actually done it.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

There are no vaccination requirements to enter New Zealand.

New Zealand is largely a clean, healthy, disease-free country with only a few health concerns. Medical attention is of a high quality but does come at a cost. We highly recommend taking out travel insurance with decent medical coverage in case you need any medical attention in New Zealand.

Tip!  The sun is very intense/strong in New Zealand with a skin burning time under 10 minutes in summer.  Camper van rental companies do recommend using Sun-cream with a minimum Factor of 20 during your travels.

TRAVELLING NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is an easy and very safe country to travel. Kiwis (People of New Zealand) are extremely polite and very helpful. If you asked for assistance in a rural area in New Zealand you are more likely to be invited to join them in their home than to be turned away.  So do not hesitate asking.

MAORI CULTURE

The Māori people are the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and first arrived here in waka hourua (voyaging canoes) from their ancestral homeland over 1000 years ago. Today, Māori make up over 14 percent of the population. Their language and culture has a major impact on all facets of New Zealand life.

Māori culture is a rich and varied one, including traditional and contemporary arts. Traditional arts such as carving, weaving, kapa haka (group performance), whaikorero
(oratory) and moko (tattoo) are practiced throughout the country. Being tattooed in the face is a sign of wealth for Maoris so do not be scared.

The visitor to New Zealand will become immediately aware of the Māori language as the vast majority of place names are of Māori origin.  While traveling New Zealand we do highly recommend to take part in Maori culture

One of the museums you should not miss while in New Zealand is Te Papa in Wellington. The Papa will offer you an excellent inside about New Zealand. Entry is free and it is well worth a visit – even if you are not the type of a person visiting museums. You will be surprised at how interesting a museum can be.
